Get Messy | Season of Lists 5 and 6 | Reveal

I DID finish the last two weeks of Get Messy Season of Lists… on time each week and posted on Instagram and Facebook… However, to be complete I show them here on my blog in this post (quite late!).

Here are my week 5 pages… The first is a photo and paper collage talking about my lucky day. Can you find the three fairies?

I took the materials for this one out of the trash… the prompt was “I am made up of”. I love the deconstruction of the phrase…

I am so inspired by… dolphins, joyous dolphin energy and my spirit dolphin Lucy.

This one was fun! I wrote a few of my favorite quotes by Matsuo Basho and with the exception of the image (found on the internet, printed on tracing paper) the page is done in makeup.

Believe it or not I had nothing for the prompt daydreams. So while I listened to one of the speakers on the Hay House World Summit I simply doodled.

Absolutely LOVE this page I did in the last week of #messylists. The prompt is obvious AND I used my own superimposed face to illustrate so I used an art prompt as well. Yep that’s my face on the clones from the series Orphan Black (btw awesome show and great lead actress, Tatiana Maslany).

This next one joined the prompt about peace and an art prompt using “penmanship”… (Ok, I did use a font!).

And next was a little upside down fun for this last week of #messylists and the prompt Home is Where… .

My last page for this season of Get Messy Art Journal lists was a vision board, including the art prompt using hashtags. Some day I’d love to be free of hip pain! You can click on any of the photos to see them larger.

There is a two-week break now before the next season so I’ll have a welcome break and a build up of anticipation! Have a wonderful weekend my friends! And as always, thank you so much for tuning in and witnessing my creative growth as an artist.

What exactly is art journaling?

Ambiguous answer: whatever you want it to be! More specific answer: Art journaling is a notebook that you fill with drawings, paintings, thoughts, words, lyrics, photos, magazine cutouts and random ephemera from your life and events. It can be where you practice art techniques or sketch out big projects. It can be your journal where all things creative + all things emotional intersect. You can put in pretty things you find and want to keep or it can be where you collect and process through your deepest, darkest thoughts. It is where art and journaling meet. Get Messy | Season of Lists 3| Half Way!

Goodness, I just realized after this week of Get Messy Lists, we are half way through the season! I don’t really have an over-riding theme for this week. I did follow all the list prompts and four of the five art prompts. Here are the pages, quick and easy. In fairness to Get Messy Art Journal, I’m not going to officially reveal the prompts (you can guess tho!)

Call me... (list) Write on photo (art)

Things that are magic (list)

Right now... (list), Write list in paint (art) ok... it was a brush pen and I only used it on part of the page...

I want to try (list), Use as many synonyms as you can (art)

I’m looking forward to next week’s Get Messy Art Journal prompts! I’m really enjoying working with the journal I made just for the season.

Do you have a fave list from above? Do you relate to any of them? Comment below if you’d like to know more about any of my lists… I didn’t go into detail this week!

Have a wonderful weekend my friends! And as always, thank you so much for tuning in and witnessing my creative growth as an artist.

12/52 Portraits – Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe

A few months ago I found a wonderful, creative and daring woman who I have come to admire and enjoy! Her name is Vanessa and she is the energy behind this 52 Portraits challenge.

The creative adventure vibe I put out at the beginning of 2016 attracted her and the Get Messy tribe into my life. This week in one of my Get Messy Lists, I stole one of her lists and then took photos of myself expressing each line. I thought it went along with the vibe/tribe portrait prompt. Vanessa and I have never met, so I include her picture in this fun photo booth collage.

Here is the Get Messy list page I made using her list.

IMG_3865

Not surprisingly, her list is close to what I would have written to this prompt. The first pic is me showing a handmade journal I made for the season (try new things | explore). The second, “a little confused | befuddled” is true for me this season because I don’t like to list so I puzzled over how to make it fun for me. The third is totally tongue in cheek, “stretch | experiment | adventurous” tempted me to simply stretch in the shot… sorry Vanessa, lol. And the fourth “work on a smaller scale | work intimately | go out of my comfort zone” is also me… I love working big but I made a lot of pages in my handmade journal quite small… eek… hope I don’t have to write much on them, I can’t write small.

I hope you don’t mind being part of my creative tribe Vanessa! I am inspired by your ability to be honest in your art and life and I love all the techniques you explore and share with us.

I’m so glad you stopped by. I encourage you to visit Vanessa at her blog: www.dans-mon-crane.blogspot.com Have a great day!

Get Messy | Season of Lists 2 | Spiritual Connections

This was a powerful week for me in the 2nd week of Get Messy Lists. Each of the prompts elicited a soul connection of some sort. When I look at each page now, I am empowered!

The first prompt I tackled was super powers I’d like to have. Easy peasy: Communicating with animals and being an incredible and inspiring artist touching many lives. Artists represented are Leonardo DaVinci, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt and Vjatseslav Mjod.

IMG_3814

The next list prompt is Loves of my Life, and I also used one of the art prompts, list on something unusual. The above prompt and this one are visual lists, no words beyond the subject.

IMG_3839

I used another art prompt for this next list”When I grow up”: an animal letters font! It is perfect for my answer.

IMG_3829

The prompt “I want to go…” invites physical places. I took it in another direction (and I used the art prompt to use my favorite font).

IMG_3837

And I used the classic list for the last one. As I wrote this list I realized how profoundly I’ve changed in the past 10 years. Wow!

IMG_3835

I will look at this journal and these lists over and over for years and be inspired with each viewing. What treasures an art journal can hold. If you journal in any way, do you journal in an inspiring way?

Have a wonderful weekend my friends! And as always, thank you so much for tuning in and witnessing my creative growth as an artist.

9/52 Portraits – Hide/Reveal

Week 9 is here in the 52 portraits class. The subject? Hide/Reveal…

I decided not to go with the introvert/extrovert idea that this prompt first suggested to me. Instead I explored the expression of my right and left brains on my face. I took a photo of myself as front facing as possible. I then cropped it down the middle and matched the two right sides of my face and then the two left sides (as best I could). In the collage the original image is in the middle.

Enlight1

So when you look at all three pictures, the one on the left is the side of the face controlled by the left, logical and linear brain. The one on the right is controlled by the expressive, creative, non-verbal right side of the brain.  It’s a fascinating experiment.

Conclusions? I’m thinking the person on the left looks less interesting than the other two. And the one on the right pretty happy! What do you think?

I’m so glad you stopped by. Do you think there is a big difference between the two sides of your face?

Get Messy | Season of Happy 6 | Different Moods

It’s week six in the Season of Happy at Get Messy Art Journal. This week I’ve created two very different double pages to express my happiness. It’s the last week of this season. Our next one begins on April 4 and I’m looking forward to finding out the theme. At the end of this post is an explanation of art journaling and the Get Messy experience!

The first prompt I did was Happiness is… that was simple!  Happiness for me is walking the woods and fields of our Idaho mountain property. All the photos are mine taken on the ranch.

art journal ranch

The second prompt I took on was art journaling my first happy memory. Well, I have no memories of my early childhood so I made up stories from two photos of me when I was four.

roller skates in red

In the left hand panel I’m dressed up in mom’s shoes and some fabric I’ve wrapped around myself.

dr suess

I was wearing roller skates in this page. I wonder if I imagined myself looking just like that girl on her skates. I had fun getting a 1960’s feel for these pages.

rollerskates

Can you feel the difference in energy between the ranch page and the 1960’s page? I love how the colors and lines and texture or lack of helped create two totally different moods.

Do you have a favorite? Right now I’m going with the red one… it lifts my spirits and excites me to look at it.

Have a wonderful weekend my friends!

Get Messy | Season of Happy | Week 3

I’ve been art journaling for three weeks now during the Season of Happy at Get Messy Art Journal. This week I’m working with a few quotes to highlight on my journal pages.

My first page is graffiti inspired. I think of grafitti in more urban areas, but since my ‘hood’ is a ranch, I used the idea of writing on a barn.

"Take pleasure in the rich, random patterns in your life." From hector and the search for happiness.

“Take pleasure in the rich, random patterns in your life.” From hector and the search for happiness.

I used patterned paper, art markers and pencil. The image is a digital drawing I created from a photo I took of one of our barns. I have no color ink in my printer so I had to do it in b+w and color it. I went on a web search for grafitti fonts for PSE. The writing is off my printer on cream cardstock and then I used a paper punch to break up the lines. The two leaves are … well, two leaves. When I was weighting down the drying page they fell out of one of the books I was using. Clearly I’d pressed them in there (and forgotten them) just for this piece! lol

My second page also uses patterned paper and pencil. This time I used paint chips I’d picked up from a hardware store for color (thanks to which ever Get Messian suggested this).

IMG_2731

I carefully added some random text stamping… wow, that can go wrong so quickly especially when it’s on top of a layer you want to keep. But it worked! I’ve very happy with it.  I used another one of the free grafitti fonts I found.

I wish you all a happy weekend my friends and fellow Get Messians.

Get Messy | Season of Happy | Relation-ships

It’s Week 2 of the Season of Happy at Get Messy Art Journal. This week I’m exploring the ‘happy happy joy joy’ that my deepest relationships bring me. And all but 2 images are my relations… Relation-ships… get it? 🙂

ghwk2.1

In my first double page spread I brought my family (and BFF soul sister and fur family) together. For the background I tried a painting technique using watercolors and blowing the wet paint with a straw to represent connections. If I were to do it again, I’d either use more subdued colors or cover the intense colors with a thin layer of gesso to mute them. Although I like the vibrancy of the color and motion – my relationships are vibrant – I wonder if it takes away from the images. Too busy overall? What do you think?

I had fun with the dictionary pages and whimsical children’s drawings.

For my second double spread page this week I was inspired by the suggestion to doodle. I remembered that I had a treasure trove of ‘ephemera’ of my hubby’s and my courtship. Of all things, by bringing a small plastic file box with my ‘important papers’ with us in the motor home I was bringing three huge plastic folders full of xoxoxoxox stuff. (I didn’t bring the over 50 snail mail cards he sent me though… no room in the file!)

ghwk2.2

When we were courting in 2011/12 we spent 6 months making the 2 hour drive to see each other each weekend alternating his place/my place. During the week we deliriously texted and emailed.  And I printed out and saved it all. The images you see are drawings I made on my kindle riding the bus back home after a weekend at his place. I sent them as digital images to Tim, and eventually made them into little pieces of art. I love that Tim always sent me home on the bus with a bouquet of flowers…

3.18.12

So my second art journal page turned out to be a Valentine’s Day present for Tim and me. It’s got text messages we wrote (don’t worry, I didn’t include the sexting… giggle), passages from emails, the way Tim addressed some of his cards for me. And the collection of my drawings. And of course sequins… you can never have enough sparkle. 😉

Happy Valentine’s Day Timothy, My Sexy Engineer in Overalls!

Although this romantic page is also busy, the idea of doodling in your journal with lots of text is by nature a messy happening.

I wish you all a happy weekend my friends and fellow Get Messians.

Get Messy | Season of Happy | Week 1

It is the Season of Happy in the Get Messy Art Journal challenge.

I finished an art journal double page expressing my ‘happy place’ on Wednesday, although I worked on it for 3 days.

forest1

“I grew up in a forest. It’s like a room. It’s protected. Like a cathedral… it is a place between heaven and earth.” – Anselm Kiefer

I grew up on a 20 acre farm in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and our forest was my favorite place. I now live on a 22 acre ranch in the mountains of Idaho (McCall). The woods on our ranch are magical and the two nature photos in the art journal page are from that ranch. The pic of my shoes and socks? Still a little mysterious to me why they are meant to be on the page, but my personal theme this year is duality so…  The woods ground me and maybe my feet symbolize that. And yes I often wear socks that don’t match. (All three photos are mine.)

Right now I am using paper as the main medium for my art pages. I see a lot of other people using paints but I’ve never been much of a painter. I predict that will change as the year of Get Messy progresses.

The second ‘happy’ page I made is another in the series of my spirit animals (see Bear here). This week I was led along a fringe of trees in my RV park by a lovely little hummingbird and since she is one of my spirit teachers, I was inspired to make this page.

hummingbird1

I love to color with my Prismacoler art markers and this particular coloring book is Art Nouveau Figurative Designs by Alphonse Marie Mucha rendered by Ed Sibbett, Jr. The drawing and saying about the hummingbird is from the Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and David Carson. I love the pink material I used around the woman and bird… it came with a bouquet of fresh flowers my hubby gave me last week.

Since I love of my photo apps, I played with both the images of the pages and came up with these:

The inverse colors of the forest art journal page using Enlight for iPhone.

The inverse colors of the forest art journal page using Enlight for iPhone. I think it’s awesome! Talk about duality.

Block print filter of hummingbird art journal page using Enlight app for iPhone.

Block print filter of hummingbird art journal page using Enlight app for iPhone. The block print look seems to be well suited to the Art Nouveau art.

I have three different art journals ready for pages. This particular one is 11×9 hard cover Pentalic art paper book. My others are ‘found’ books and I’m looking forward to filling these as well. Blank pages used to intimidate me, now they are inviting.

Have a great weekend my friends and fellow Get Messians.
