Get Messy | Season of Happy 5 | Beh-Bees

It’s week five in the Season of Happy at Get Messy Art Journal. This week I’ve combined all four of the journal and art prompts into two pages which work as a double page with a small third in between.

This past weekend I visited my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter Emma. As you can imagine I’m still full of the delicious sights, sounds and smells (not including the diaper one) of that darling girl.  I created a page of one of the happy things from my childhood (reading), and books are happy objects for me. Emma is one of the most happy people I know because she fully embraces all her experiences and is so loved and cared for by her parents and extended family. So hers is the second page. As I was coloring and painting I listened to my favorite Madeleine Peyroux Pandora Radio station.

On my page, I have images of real books I’ve kept from my childhood. The cat illustrations are from my favorite early book, Surprise in the Tree by Sara Asheron, illustrated by Susan Perl. I printed out the images of the books and illustrations and then colored them with crayons, colored pencils, chalk and colored glitter pens. I used an analogous color scheme (colors located next to each other on the color wheel).

For Emma’s page I used a more exciting color scheme, the triadic primary colors of red, blue and yellow. Her energy is so vital and she is constantly moving so I used a circular pattern to show that (she loves twirling too). The drawings are from photos my daughter-in-law took of Emma posing for selfies with a shirt on her head. I used children’s watercolors, crayons, patterned paper and colored pencil. For fun I wrote an alliterative haiku describing her.

As a bridge, I made an insert between the pages.  Each of us is reading a book (about the same age). One of Emma’s words is beh-bee for baby. I thought it such fun to label each with beh-bee. I used the enlight app on my iphone to transform the photos into distressed, graffiti-esque images.  (My name was Karen when I was little. I changed it in my 20s – a story for another time.)

These are such giggly pages for me and I know I’ll look at them over and over. I can tell you that coloring and painting like a tot is wonderful. It’s so freeing, I highly recommend it!

I wish you all a happy weekend my friends and fellow Get Messians.
