17/52 Portraits – Self Care Extraordinaire!

52portraits logo3

This week in Vanessa’s 52 Portraits Class, I chose the prompt about the importance of self-care. I’ve actually had 20 days of extraordinary daily self-care!

IMG_4567

For the past 20 days I’ve listened to inspiring, transformational interviews on the Hay House World Summit. They ranged from Louise Hay to Robert Holden to Joe Dispenza to Esther Hicks/Abraham to people I’d never heard of who are lightworkers extraordinaire. I’d listen to at least one a day and usually three (there were 100!). Sometimes I listened while I was doing dishes and most times like this, on the couch in the RV with Cooper the Cattledog at my feet and Tuxedo Jack purring on my chest. I’ve soaked up so many positive vibes I’m sure I’ll wake up tomorrow with wings to fly. I plan to schedule listening to HayHouse Radio a couple of times each week to continue this great spiritual learning high and wonderful self-care experience.

My favorite quote from one of the speakers (at least today) is:

Honor the space between no longer and not yet.

Nancy Levin

I’m so glad you stopped by. What have you been doing lately to take care of yourself? Have a great weekend!

16/52 Portraits – Sassy and Powerful

52portraits logo3

This week I did the 52 Portraits Class prompt: Claws Out which I have interpreted as Sassy and Powerful. The idea is what do we do to make ourselves feel more confident when we don’t necessarily feel it inside.

For me, I spruce up what I’m wearing… I wear a color that makes me feel sassy. In 1979 I had my ‘colors done’ and then in the 80s became a color analyst myself. I worked at a women’s clothing store and studio, helping women realize their unique power through their own personal colors and styles. Long past are the days when I dressed for success, as we think of in the corporate world, but I almost always still wear my colors.

For this portrait, I put on one of my power colors… a deep turquoise blue. This is an offshoot of my eye color and so brings out the intensity of my eyes (not sure that comes thru in this particular shot). I also put on a beautiful stone necklace that is not only a fine piece of hand crafted jewelry, but the soft tones of my skin color.

powercolorweb

I also wear makeup when I want to feel confident in public. However, this year my makeup is much more subtle than ever before. A little color on my cheeks and lips and color for my brows. I am probably going to color my hair again soon to give a boost to my overall vivaciousness, but I’m happy living on our ranch now, au naturel…

This shot is extra fun because over my shoulder you can see a charcoal drawing I did when I was in art school. It gives me a lovely boost of confidence when I see it. And yes those are cat hairs you see on my clothes… all the best dressed people wear them you know… 😉 .

I’m so glad you stopped by. What do you do to give yourself that extra boost of confidence? Have a great day!

Get Messy | Season of Lists 5 and 6 | Reveal

season of lists cover5.6

I DID finish the last two weeks of Get Messy Season of Lists… on time each week and posted on Instagram and Facebook… However, to be complete I show them here on my blog in this post (quite late!).

Here are my week 5 pages… The first is a photo and paper collage talking about my lucky day. Can you find the three fairies?

IMG_4100

I took the materials for this one out of the trash… the prompt was “I am made up of”. I love the deconstruction of the phrase…

I am so inspired by… dolphins, joyous dolphin energy and my spirit dolphin Lucy.

13198633_10209090162396684_5715108649811169616_o

This one was fun! I wrote a few of my favorite quotes by Matsuo Basho and with the exception of the image (found on the internet, printed on tracing paper) the page is done in makeup.

IMG_4095

Believe it or not I had nothing for the prompt daydreams. So while I listened to one of the speakers on the Hay House World Summit I simply doodled.

Absolutely LOVE this page I did in the last week of #messylists. The prompt is obvious AND I used my own superimposed face to illustrate so I used an art prompt as well. Yep that’s my face on the clones from the series Orphan Black (btw awesome show and great lead actress, Tatiana Maslany).

This next one joined the prompt about peace and an art prompt using “penmanship”… (Ok, I did use a font!).

And next was a little upside down fun for this last week of #messylists and the prompt Home is Where… .

My last page for this season of Get Messy Art Journal lists was a vision board, including the art prompt using hashtags. Some day I’d love to be free of hip pain! You can click on any of the photos to see them larger.

There is a two-week break now before the next season so I’ll have a welcome break and a build up of anticipation! Have a wonderful weekend my friends! And as always, thank you so much for tuning in and witnessing my creative growth as an artist.

What exactly is art journaling?

Ambiguous answer: whatever you want it to be! More specific answer: Art journaling is a notebook that you fill with drawings, paintings, thoughts, words, lyrics, photos, magazine cutouts and random ephemera from your life and events. It can be where you practice art techniques or sketch out big projects. It can be your journal where all things creative + all things emotional intersect. You can put in pretty things you find and want to keep or it can be where you collect and process through your deepest, darkest thoughts. It is where art and journaling meet. 15/52 Portraits – I’m in the Clone Club

52portraits logo3

This week I did the 52 Portraits Class prompt: Stories We Love. It dovetailed with a Get Messy Art Journal prompt, Currently Watching… I couldn’t help using my photo editing project for both.

I am an avid fan of the BBC America series, Orphan Black. I’ve watched all the seasons multiple times and can’t get enough of it! Essentially it’s a story about clones who find each other and band together to survive.

One actress, Tatiana Maslany, plays all the clones. She is amazing! I feel off-balance when I see the cast of the show being interviewed, because instead of all five of the main characters/clones there is only one actress! Each of the characters Tatiana plays is so fully realized, I see them as people and so look for more actresses!

For the Get Messy prompt and then this portrait, I decided to superimpose my face on publicity shots of the clone characters. (Some turned out better than others, but all are fun! I used the Enlight app on iPhone 6s.)

IMG_4134

Orphan Black combines my love of SciFi and mystery; and an appreciation of great ensemble acting and skillful characterizations of the clones, created by the production team and Tatiana. What is that extra ingredient that has me watching it over and over? I relate to the archetypal personalities of the clones… In fact, since I hate to clean, I channel my inner soccer mom, Alison, when it’s time to vacuum! Do I channel an inner assassin (Helena)? Ah … no… but I totally love her bad-assery! lol

Here is how the Get Messy List prompt turned out. I added a hint of blood spatter to honor the black comedy of the series.

IMG_4159

This portrait shows how successful the Orphan Black story is… not only do I imagine myself as the lead character of the series, I imagine myself as all five! 😉 Clearly I highly recommend this series! Are any of you familiar with it? Or do you have another show you are fascinated by? Let me know in a comment!

I’m so glad you stopped by. Have a great day!

14/52 Portraits – Parenthood

52portraits logo3

My husband has 3 sons and I have 2… but since they are all out of the house, my parenthood portrait includes our fur family instead!

This week is a great time to post about this as we just bought a new, king sized mattress… because… … hubby had no place to sleep on our queen sized bed! ;D

Enlight1

Here I am (on the queen) with Cooper the Cattledog at my back, Tuxedo Jack in the curve of my legs and Buffy the haiku writing kitty in the curve of my waist. Yes, that is me tucked under all those blankets… Photo credit goes to Tim my wonderful mate.

I love my human children and I am so happy I am an empty nester. Our fur family is plenty for us in our 640 square foot home. And although demanding in their own way, the complex nature of the human parent/child relationship is missing (phew).

What about you? Are you an empty nester? or still enjoying the challenge of relating to young people in your tribe?

I’m so glad you stopped by. Have a great day!

Get Messy | Season of Lists 4 | Lists to Affirm

season of lists cover4

I’m having a lot of fun with listing this season since I made my art journal from scratch and am constricted by the existing page designs. While answering the list prompts, I’ve noticed that I’ve made many of them into affirmations.

This first one is more journal and less art… the prompt was “in the next 6 months”, but I turned it into an affirmation for what I’d like my ideal day to be like.

IMG_3976

I altered this next prompt a bit, by using treasure instead of gratitude. I used an art prompt as well, stripes on stripes.

IMG_3992

I used an art prompt with this one as well, black and white. And instead of “proud of” I used “love”.

IMG_3981

I had fun with this one because I used tags and wrote the lists on the back of them. (3 photos of same page)

IMG_4002

IMG_4003

IMG_4004

I don’t use magazine photos in my art journaling very often but I think this one turned out pretty darn cute.

IMG_4018

I’d say four out of the five prompts were affirmative “lists”. I love that I’m doing this… it makes the journal pages even more inspiring and fun for me. Do you have a vision board to focus on what you want your future to be like? I may take pics of some of these journal pages and tack them up on a wall in my art studio.

Have a wonderful weekend my friends! And as always, thank you so much for tuning in and witnessing my creative growth as an artist.

13/52 Portraits – Balance

52portraits logo3

Finding balance in my life has always been a challenge for me.

My nature is such that I tend to focus really hard on one thing at a time (blogging, art, spiritual exploration, work) and let everything else go by the wayside. My bipolar condition also trips me up on occasion… self-care goes down the drain and unstructured times are difficult for me when I get depressed or anxious. I have spent years learning how to balance my life.

Right now I am juggling my artistic exploration, emotional and spiritual recovery, remodeling the ranch house and developing a healthy and fit lifestyle. I’m doing pretty well actually, and luckily my dog Cooper keeps me on schedule each day. He reminds me to eat, take exercise breaks and get up and go to sleep at the same time each day.

I’m a lucky girl to have a husband who likes to work hard AND play! I forget to play sometimes (besides doing my art). It’s important to get out of the studio and house. To illustrate this I took a portrait of myself in the reflection of hubby’s helmet, on the back of a motorcycle ride last week.

IMG_4009

Motorcycle rides are such immediate sensory experiences. I feel exhilarated at the speed. I enjoy the visual delights I see that I don’t in a car. My mind travels to all sorts of places and the silly daily chatter blows away. It is also an exercise in trust… I fully trust and love my dear husband to keep us safe and sound. The whole experience is delicious joy, bringing more balance into my life.

I love that this post is about balancing my life, and we are balanced in the photo… on two wheels!

Thank you my pooch and hubby for helping balance my daily life, and my online community for keeping me honest, inspired and on task. How do you keep your balance in your life?

I’m so glad you stopped by. Have a great day!

Get Messy | Season of Lists 3| Half Way!

season of lists cover3

Goodness, I just realized after this week of Get Messy Lists, we are half way through the season! I don’t really have an over-riding theme for this week. I did follow all the list prompts and four of the five art prompts. Here are the pages, quick and easy. In fairness to Get Messy Art Journal, I’m not going to officially reveal the prompts (you can guess tho!)

Call me... (list) Write on photo (art)

Things that are magic (list)

Right now... (list), Write list in paint (art) ok... it was a brush pen and I only used it on part of the page...

I want to try (list), Use as many synonyms as you can (art)

I’m looking forward to next week’s Get Messy Art Journal prompts! I’m really enjoying working with the journal I made just for the season.

Do you have a fave list from above? Do you relate to any of them? Comment below if you’d like to know more about any of my lists… I didn’t go into detail this week!

Have a wonderful weekend my friends! And as always, thank you so much for tuning in and witnessing my creative growth as an artist.

12/52 Portraits – Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe

52portraits logo3

A few months ago I found a wonderful, creative and daring woman who I have come to admire and enjoy! Her name is Vanessa and she is the energy behind this 52 Portraits challenge.

The creative adventure vibe I put out at the beginning of 2016 attracted her and the Get Messy tribe into my life. This week in one of my Get Messy Lists, I stole one of her lists and then took photos of myself expressing each line. I thought it went along with the vibe/tribe portrait prompt. Vanessa and I have never met, so I include her picture in this fun photo booth collage.

collagevanessa

Here is the Get Messy list page I made using her list.

IMG_3865

Not surprisingly, her list is close to what I would have written to this prompt. The first pic is me showing a handmade journal I made for the season (try new things | explore). The second, “a little confused | befuddled” is true for me this season because I don’t like to list so I puzzled over how to make it fun for me. The third is totally tongue in cheek, “stretch | experiment | adventurous” tempted me to simply stretch in the shot… sorry Vanessa, lol. And the fourth “work on a smaller scale | work intimately | go out of my comfort zone” is also me… I love working big but I made a lot of pages in my handmade journal quite small… eek… hope I don’t have to write much on them, I can’t write small.

I hope you don’t mind being part of my creative tribe Vanessa! I am inspired by your ability to be honest in your art and life and I love all the techniques you explore and share with us.

I’m so glad you stopped by. I encourage you to visit Vanessa at her blog: www.dans-mon-crane.blogspot.com Have a great day!

Get Messy | Season of Lists 2 | Spiritual Connections

season of lists cover2

This was a powerful week for me in the 2nd week of Get Messy Lists. Each of the prompts elicited a soul connection of some sort. When I look at each page now, I am empowered!

The first prompt I tackled was super powers I’d like to have. Easy peasy: Communicating with animals and being an incredible and inspiring artist touching many lives. Artists represented are Leonardo DaVinci, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt and Vjatseslav Mjod.

IMG_3814

The next list prompt is Loves of my Life, and I also used one of the art prompts, list on something unusual. The above prompt and this one are visual lists, no words beyond the subject.

IMG_3839

I used another art prompt for this next list”When I grow up”: an animal letters font! It is perfect for my answer.

IMG_3829

The prompt “I want to go…” invites physical places. I took it in another direction (and I used the art prompt to use my favorite font).

IMG_3837

And I used the classic list for the last one. As I wrote this list I realized how profoundly I’ve changed in the past 10 years. Wow!

IMG_3835

I will look at this journal and these lists over and over for years and be inspired with each viewing. What treasures an art journal can hold. If you journal in any way, do you journal in an inspiring way?

Have a wonderful weekend my friends! And as always, thank you so much for tuning in and witnessing my creative growth as an artist.
